W can handle setbacks

Earlier this week we shared the story of Power Woman Farida van den Stoom (click here to read her feature in Dutch). She told us how she flicked the switch in her mind after a series of setbacks. Your mindset determines how you react and deal with situations. How do you deal with setbacks? In this blog we offer you a few suggestions.

Take back control

When you are in a positive flow, you can get pretty down after a few setbacks. Whether it’s an injury after you’ve just started working out again, a financial setback when you just saved up to invest in your company or a partner who decides to leave you even though you were under the impression your relationship couldn’t be any better. It is hard work staying positive during those moments. Especially when you experience several setbacks within a short time period. Never forget at these times that you are the director of your life; you can’t always decide what happens to you, but you can decide how you deal with it.

Tips to learn how to cope with setbacks

  • Keep your goal in mind. Whatever happens, if your goal is still the same, hold on to it. Go back to the basics; why did you start this in the first place? Place reminders of your goal everywhere you can; post-its in the house and in the car, add a screensaver on your laptop and phone, etc.
  • Don’t be too hard on yourself. It is not the end of the world if it’s going to take you longer to reach your goal, or if you have to start over again. In reality, you don’t really start over, because you’ve learned from your past mistakes and are therefore further along than before. As long as you know what you are doing and you keep your goal in mind, you are unstoppable!
  • Put your setback in perspective. In relation to other suffering in the world, your setback is certainly unpleasant but not insurmountable. Things could always be worse.
  • Stay positive. If necessary, change your password to Happiness 😉 just like Farida. Do things that make you happy. This will bring you back to a positive vibe and you will feel motivated to pick up where you left off in no time. Last but not least, don’t forget to enjoy the journey towards your goal.
